Skills Development

Throughout last year I didn't do a lot of editing I only knew the basics. But i had a hands on approach of editing with these music videos, due to the fact I watch a lot of them i found it fun and interesting. I learnt how to fade and push clips which as u can see I did a lot of the music video.

I also learnt how to do slow motions which was one of the effects my teachers wanted to see more of in this years music videos.

“Producing
a
Music
Video” http://grahamspice.com/docs/Producing_a_Music_Video.pdf

In my spare time I found a site that showed me how to produce a music video, I thought it was interesting to look at how their idea of the production stage differed from ours.

Editing skills audit

Planning developmet.

PLANNING FOR AS - Thriller opening.
- We looked at different opening of videos for inspirations and analysed the credits etc. so we knew the order when we included credits on ours.
- Looked at previous students work so we were able to see other students work and incorporate them into our own ideas.
- To illustrate how we wanted our thriller to go, we drew pictures for a story board and took pictures of the drawings and put it in a slide show.
-We pitched our ideas, got feedback with a production schedule. ( Which we stuck to very good)
STARTED FILMING.

PLANNING FOR A2  - Music video.
- Looked for different songs we would like to do, narrowed them down.
- Sent copyright letters asking permissions to all the music artists..
- Then narrowed it down to the final song. Just a little - Tinnie Tempah
- We has to think about who we wanted to play the artists. Micheal etc.
- Searched for inspirations from other Music Videos.
- Looked at other student videos that we liked and decided how we wanted it to look.
- Found locations due to inspirations from Trey Songz ft Chipmunk - Take Off.
- Printed out the lyrics and did a shot list for each line and named each verse by location.
- Did a pitch on: Costume( by looking at artists of this genre), mise en scene (research on other music videos), brands associated with artists (reseach on brands associated with brands) , record company signage (research)
- We got feedback and made a production schedule (Didn't stick to it as good)

Skills development on our chosen song Tinie Tempah-Just a little

Before we could begin to make our music video we first had to plan our production method.

We first printed out our song lyrics of the internet from that we could then create a shot list of what camera angles we wanted for each line in the song and the location we wanted for the chorus and verse. In my AS year as I was creating a film, me and my AS group thought it would be more easier to map out our plan of locations and camera shots on a storyboard. However as we our creating a music video a shot list seemed quicker to do and more clearer to read through when continuing on to the production stage.

After creating our shot-list we looked at a range of different videos that would give us some inspiration of how we wanted our music video to look, as there are four of us in the group we all have different ideas of how we wanted the music video to be. Therefore we picked a few Music vids that had different aspects we all wanted our music video to show. for example; Chipmunk ft Trey Songz- Take off - we took inspiration from the city location and the park.
Now we had an idea of what we wanted our music video to look like we could then move onto our pitch that we had to show in-front of the class. In the Pitch we had to discuss:

  • Costumes our artists will be wearing - We took our inspiration of clothing from Tinie Tempah
  • The locations in which we will be recording- Alexandra Palace and Lecster Square
  • Brand image- all the brands we will be using.
  • Were we got our ideas from- Chipmunk ft Trey Songz (Take Off) & Tinie Tempah (Pass Out)
  • Our Audience target audience overall - Mainly girls, Younger Audiences (16-24) year old's and for audiences who our interested in our choice of genre (hip-hop)
  • A Specific target audience - We created our ideal person who we thought would most suit our choice of song and is most likely to listen to it.
  • Goodwins Theory
  • Our artists signing
  • Risk assessment

Once we presented our pitch we got consignment from our teacher that we were allowed to film however before we could start to record we first had to plan out our production schedule- this enables the teacher to know were we will be taking the equipment, how long for we will be using it and times of pick up and drop off. We also had to fill out a red slip giving down our name and group number which enables our group full responsibilities for use of the equipment. We then could start to record our music video, although as a group we thought it was best that we first took some practice shots and planned out were we wanted out artists to stand in-front of the camera and how we wanted the lighting however we only managed to plan out this part in the studio in college. In the other locations, out of college we began immediately.

Although there was a lot of similarities to the planning I did in AS, this year we our creating a music video rather than a horror film which meant some of the planning methods was different, for example:
  • The pitch in AS had different slides to do with the film industry rather than the music industry.
  • I found that the presentation of our pitch in AS wasn't as good as the one we did this year for our music video (we took more consideration in planning and presenting skills.)
  • using a storyboard rather than a shot-list
  • before we choose one location in creating our film rather then three with our music video
  • Costumes and brand labels were less important as we were creating a horror sequence, so a lot of it was done in the dark.
  • Making the film we used one actor, in the making of our music video we have too artists
  • The roles in our group are different to the roles we had making the horror film in AS

Rough-cut for our music video 'Just a little'

Rough cut evaluation

Today we finished our rough cut for our music video 'Just a little' however there were some advantages and disadvantages to our video therefore we will have to make some adjustments in our final.

Advantages

  • The slides and fades create movement to the music video
  • The footage for alexandra palace were most useful because there was good lighting and a lot of space.
  • We had 3 different outfits for the different locations, which stuck to a normal convention to other music videos that made our music video look more attractive and exciting.
  • Locations was well thought as this added content to the music video.
  • Because we worked as a team, everyone knew there role in the film taking.
Beverley: camera women and director
Michael: editor and artist
Malika : Designer and director photographer
Denise: Sound Producer and photographer

  • The ad-libs gave us more footage
Disadvantages
  • Lip syncing in certain ereas was accurate enough
  • lighting in studio and lecister square was too dark compared to Alexandra palace
  • We couldn't record anymore so we had limited footage to work with.
  • Kept to limited shots and angles as the majority were mid shots.
  • The earth quake effect wasn't as effective in Ally pally as it was in lecister square because the lights in lecister square went more in the mood with the song.

Skills development.

In AS making the thriller movie
  1. viewed diffrent openings to a thriller
  2. Gathered ideas which would be suitable for our opening
  3. Main ideas on to the storyboard
  4. Made an animatic of how our thriller will look like
  5. Pitched our final ideas
  6. Filiming was then started
  7. Moved on to the editing but had to come up with our own sound which was done in sound pro to compliment the thriller. we also used Live type to introduce the Cast and the backstage Crew, however this was not needed in the music video.
  8. Rough cut of the thriller.
  9. Final Footage.
In the A2 Music video
  1. We came up with many different song choices but had to nail it down to one . (short list)
  2. Had to send a range of letters to the main artist (copyright) asking permission if we could use their songs.
  3. Our final song choice was "Tinie Tempah- Just a little.
  4. figure out who was going to be the artist for the video, which was our group memeber Micheal featuring his friend Range.
  5. Find a good Location which was alexandra palace, Lecister square and the studio
  6. Brief ideas on to the storyboard
  7. Animatic of how the video will look like
  8. Pitched the main ideas of what we will be including in the video and why we chose it.
  9. Filming was then started.
  10. Moved on to the editing.
  11. Rough cut of the music video
  12. Final footage.

During the filming of our music video i have learnt new editing skills such as lip sync which is the key skill to make the words in time with the video.
  • editing to the beat.
  • Adding transitions/effects (fades,wipes).

PROBLEMS: TIME,BANS AND EDITING.

NO MORE FILMING CAN BE DONE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE..
We are going to have to 'work with what we've got'. Even though there was a plan to shoot one more time at the studio. We also wanted to add a female at the end. to give the video a twist.
Plans may need to be change :(
Moral of the day: Bring equipment on time!

Another problem is we are running out of time especially as we are short of clips. Our editing skills need to be 'kicked up a notch'!

At Leicestor Square

NOTE: WE DID NOT FILM AT SOHO. IT WAS JUST A QUICK SUGGESTION !

West End - Last day of filming.

Where: Leicester Square.
When: Evening - The lights in the dark(colours of a club) 'MKs' associated with partying.

We went down to Leicester Square to film for the second verse, however we shot the whole song a few times.

ADVANTAGES:
  1. Beautiful scenery, showing the artists genre of music.
  2. Shows the urban side of London
  3. Popular location for recordings so we knew it would look good on camera.

DISADVANTAGES:
  1. Since its winter time, its gets dark quickly. The lighting isn't as good as the filming in Alexandra        Palace.
  2. People tried to get into the camera or were passing through, even infront of the camera.
  3. Buses also pass or there was traffic behind the scene making it look less like a music video.

Studio (filming music video) Advantages and Disadvantages

Today we used the studio to film the chorus of our music video, however as much advantages there were to actually filming in the studio there were some disadvantages as well;

The advantages were:
  • Easy location and access, as it was in our college
  • Quicker and more
  • If we had any difficulties with the equipment we could ask a teacher
  • If we needed some advice on the way we were filming we could as a teacher
  • As we were inside there was no problem with rain damaging the equipment
  • We was able to multi task as there was also editing suites to start looking at our footage and start blogging.
  •   If we needed more equipment the storage room was right there.
  • We had more time to record as we could do it during lesson and after college without moving location.
  • No money was spent on bus's or trains
  • There was already a lot of equipment in the studio i.e. lightings. That helped us create the scene we wanted.
  • There was a computer to play our song (just a little) so our artist was able to lip-sing along to it.
  • As there was a computer to play our song, we didn't have to use our phone batteries up.
Disadvantages
  • We found it difficult to choose whether the green screen or black back would look better for our music video, so it took up more time trying out practice shots.
  • As we ended up using the black back in the studio, there were difficulties in hiding the lining from the black curtains so the camera wouldn't capture it when recording. However if it did it might our music video look less professional.
  • We was using the lights in the studio however some of them were not working which meant there might have been some dark parts when recording.
  • As we had limited space to record in because of the lining on the curtain, it was hard for us to get our two artists in that small amount of space without crossing the line.
  • Even though we were in a dark room with tinted windows, there was still some light in the corners which could have effected the way it looked on camera.
  • I brought in strobe lights so we could see how it would look on camera however the light was too small so it did not really show on camera resulting in us not using it. However we can still create the strobe light effect on match-cut pro editing.

Film day 4 - Back in the studio

:( Range didn't turn up, but we still continued.
we went through the whole song using different types of shot types and angles. It looked good when we watched it back. All we needed was the feature artist..
I guess its another day back at the studio!

3rd Day of filming.

Location: Studio - Black background
Lights: Strobe lights and light on stand also extra lights.

The studio is the location for the chorus - the master track.
We did a few shots for the studio but once watching it back we decided we need more camera shots and angles and ran out of time
Shots used:
Medium shots.
Angles used:
High angles.

filming day 3 -Studio

For our third part of filming, we decided to use the studio in our college to record the chorus of our music video.
However we did not complete all our filming as we didnt have enough time to record,  for that reason we will continue filming on another day.

2nd Day Of Filming

basically filming was canceled due to rain and unfortunate weathers so we have rescheduled for another day. we have learnt to check the weather forcaste next time ;)

Filming day 2 in westend

Sadly, we couldn't film this day as it was raining which would not look appropriate for our music video therefore we have decided to film in west for a different day.  this time we are gonna look at the weather forcaste :)

1st Day Of Filming

The first day of filming i was the main artist MK and my feature artist Range was my friend. We went to Alexander Palace dressed up and gearing to go

Advantages

  • There was many different locations we could use ally pally. We chose the best three
  • 'MK' and 'Range' came in the right outfits. Tinie Tempah's style.
  • We had a variety of different shots- close ups, high angles, low angles, mid long shots, mid shot, 360 turn ect.
  • We had music on for each filming, which helped the lip sinking.
  • The weather was good so the location looked very good

Disadvantages

  • It was cold and windy
  • As the day went on the sky wasn't as clear which made it look darker on the camera when we was filming
  • Because we was playing music from our phone it was less professional and our batteries kept dying
  • We never got permission to film in Ally Pally,so we had to get it when we got there. This will never happen again
  • When we did the 360 turn with the camera, we had to make sure that all the props and extras were out of the shot
